Thank you to everyone who came, sponsored or donated to Brum Twestival! We have raised a massive £1951 so far with some cash still to come in. We’re £49 short of our original £2,000 target but you can still donate by clicking on the ticket button above.

It was a great night with more than a hundred people there, Caroline Beavon, Steve Nicholls, Keri Davies and Gavin Wray Djing and loads of prizes being won.

But one of the main highlights (which has been retweeted left right and centre) was Danny Smith having his chest waxed. Thank you Danny for raising over £100 for Concern Worldwide! We also should thank Julia and Nat Higginbottom from Aquila TV who made a large donation to Danny’s waxing fund.

Thank you to Julian Carr and Katherine Hill from BMI Baby, our headline sponsors who came along on the night and to Julian for drawing the raffle.

The raffle prize winners were:

A pair of flights to Alicante courtesy of BMI Baby: @kelliem24

A pair of flights to Palma courtesy of BMI Baby: @claireridgeway

A week’s holiday to Cyprus courtesy of My Cyprus Holiday: @jothomas

Meal for two at F-word winning restaurant Lasan: @moxypark

Vegetable box from Dave Harte: @ellielovell

Cover song by Friends of the Stars: @peskypeople

A signed Who’s Who of The Archers: @steverumsby

A bottle of champagne courtesy of venue Poppy Red: @karenstrunks

Photo shoot by Lee Allen: @kelliem24

Lifestyle photo shoot by Sara Moseley: @mazzawoo

Shave and wax by Waxing for Guys: @_SarahMorris_

Coffee from Urban Coffee Company: @mattwooduk

Six muffin style cupcakes from Kiss Me Cupcakes: @essitam

The non-attendance raffle prize winner was @jed_hughes and the winner of the heads and tails game with a prize of a pair of flights to Faro (courtesy of BMI Baby) was @AustenDuffy.

Thank you to everyone who supplied prizes and everyone who bought tickets. You have raised money for a fantastic cause!

Top tips for attending Brum Twestival

Posted on: 25 March 2010 at 0707 - Comment

  1. Follow us on Twitter for updates throughout the day and night.
  2. Listen out for Brum Twestival organiser Jashpal Mall being interviewed on BRMB . (Should be playing in the news section all day today.)
  3. Become a fan of us on facebook .
  4. Encourage your friends to buy a ticket or donate. They’re £5 if you buy them online before noon. Click the ticket button above.
  5. Check out the venue Poppy Red before you get there. It’s in the Arcadian in Birmingham - 5 minutes walk from New Street, 10 minutes walk from Moor Street, 5 minutes from major bus routes, there’s a taxi rank round the corner and they have loads of parking.
  6. Come along at 7.30pm (not 7pm as we’d said previously).
  7. If you’re planning to buy your ticket on the door, it will be £7.
  8. A few people have asked about dress code - there isn’t one, just wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
  9. Bring a print out of the PDF ticket you were emailed when you bought your ticket. (If you haven’t got a printer, don’t worry, we will have a list of everyone’s name - just bring some ID.)
  10. Bring lots of lovely money. We’ll be selling raffle tickets for £1 each and you could win some amazing prizes including flight and a holiday.
  11. Wear your sticker. We’ll be giving out stickers on the door so you can write your Twitter user name on.
  12. Say hello to the organising team . Particularly if you’re coming on your own, we’ll make sure you meet lots of people and have a great time.
  13. If you’re one of the first 50 people through the door you’ll get a free drink.
  14. Tweet! Use the hashtag #brumtwestival  - so the legend goes, during the first Twestival #brumtwestival trended - let’s see if we can do it again!
  15. Say thank you to the representatives of our headline sponsors BMI Baby , Katherine Hill and Julian Carr. (They’ve paid for your drinks and food!)
  16. Take lots of photos and then tag them on Flickr brumtwestival .
  17. Enjoy the nibbles.
  18. Check out our magician who will be performing sleight of hand tricks throughout the night.
  19. Say hello to as many people as you can.
  20. Check out our posters dotted around the bar with our sponsors logos on.
  21. Donate money to see Danny Smith have his chest waxed, courtesy of our sponsor Waxing for Guys .
  22. Enjoy our DJs: Caroline Beavon, Gavin Wray, Keri Davies and Steve Nicholls.
  23. Stay as late as you like. We have no set closing time. Whoop!
  24. Take a moment to remember why we are doing this: to raise money for Concern to send children in developing countries to school. Then give yourself a big pat on the back knowing that all your ticket price is going to that!
  25. Have fun!

The day is here!

Concern Worldwide

The day of Brum Twestival is here! At the time of writing, we have raised £1,116 for Concern to send children in developing countries to school, which is fantastic (and more than we had raised at this time of the last one, even though our tickets are cheaper this time).

Without wanting to sound overly sentimental, it is truly an amazing thing that because of the friendships and kindness that have sprung out of Twitter, we are going to be changing the lives of children all around the world. The Birmingham Twitter community rocks!

You can still buy a ticket - for the princely sum of £5 - online until 12noon today (Thursday) so if your friends haven’t bought one yet, give them a nudge. Click on the buy a ticket button above. You can also buy tickets on the door for £7.

Thank you to everyone who has bought a ticket, donated a raffle prize or their time, or has sponsored us. It is going to be a great night. See you all later!

Win a meal at Lasan Restaurant, Birmingham

Posted on: 22 March 2010 at 2224 - Comment

Lasan Restaurant Logo

We are extremely pleased to announce that the winner of The F Word’s Best Local Restaurant, Lasan Restaurant has donated a meal for 2 or 3 as a prize in the Brum Twestival raffle.

Using authentic and original recipes, Lasan prides itself on offering a quality dining experience that challenges perceptions of Indian cuisine beyond local takeaway restaurants.

The Lasan Restaurant won the top prize in Gordon Ramsay’s series and also won Men’s Health magazine’s Healthiest Restaurant 2009 prize amongst many other awards and recommendations.

Following it’s TV victory Lasan has become one of the most sought after eateries in Birmingham. It is in such demand that bookings must be made over a month in advance.

Owner, Jabbar Khan, has donated a voucher to the value of £80, enough to pay for a meal of 2 or 3 people at the restaurant.

Launching Brumabilities!

Posted on: 20 March 2010 at 1203 - Comment

The theme of the 3rd BrumTwestival is education. Our team was set the challenge of coming up with a way to involve education with our plans so… we’re launching brumabilities.

Inspired by the ’shared brain’ element of Twitter, Brumabilities are 60-second online how-to guides. The idea being that Brummies can share their knowledge and that will build up an archive of all the things we know how to do.

We’ve set up a Tumblr blog so you can submit video, text, pictures, illustrations, designs, audio or whatever you want to share your brumability - and you can submit as many as you like. We’ll tweet all of them, so get sharing your brumability.

Email your brumability to paul@theaardvark.co.uk and the lovely Paul Taylor will upload them.

We need small raffle prizes.

Posted on: 17 March 2010 at 2322 - Comment

Birmingham Twestival has received a number of excellent raffle prizes (and we have more details on these soon). We are also looking for a number of smaller (£5 to £20) raffle prizes to give away in one or two “Mystery Packages”.

We would like to give away a collection of smaller raffle prizes as the prize in the “non-attendance” raffle, a raffle for those who want to be involved but may not be able to attend on the evening. The prize would be a single, eclectic selection of unknown prizes from as a large a number of sources as possible, a mystery if you will.

At the first twestival I, @theeardvark, won such a prize in a silent auction and absolutely loved it. @kincowbag and I opened a prize a day for weeks.

To keep the prize a mystery we won’t be publicising the contents in advance of the night but we will announce the content on the night. When we do that we will announce and thank the people and/or businesses that donated the prizes. We will post a blog entry here after the night listing the prizes and the donors with contact details and/or a web-link as appropriate.

If you would like to donate a prize to this collection, please contact any one of the Brum Twestival organisers:

Jashpal Mall @jashpal

Kathy Doyle @kathy_e_d

Paul Taylor @theaardvark

Sharon Taylor @kincowbag

Chris Brown @crisbrown

Mark Hill @cybrum

Posted on: 10 March 2010 at 1534 - Comment

Have you heard of Brum Twestival but you’re not sure what it is or why you should come? Here’s our reasons - feel free to tweet your own:

  1. Because it’s part of a global movement of Twitter festivals all taking place on Thursday 25 March, all tweeting, fundraising and having fun at the same time
  2. Because it’s for charity! 100% of the ticket cost goes to Concern Worldwide who are going to use the money to help children in developing countries attend school
  3. Because you might win a prize in our raffle
  4. Because you’ll meet people who you only know through Twitter and put faces to names
  5. Because you’ll get to hear some great brummie DJs - Steve Nicholls, Caroline Beavon, Keri Davies and Gavin Wray
  6. Because there’s a magician. Come on, everyone loves a magician!
  7. Because if you’re from a business you’ll get to network with Birmingham’s online community
  8. Because you get a free drink (if you’re one of the first 50 through the door)
  9. Because there’ll be nibbley yummy nommy food
  10. Because it’s at Poppy Red in the Arcadian
  11. Because tickets are only £5 if you buy them online before the night (click on the buy tickets button above)
  12. Because we’re trying to raise £2000 and we’re nearly a quarter of the way there already - even if you can’t make it on the night you can still donate via the buy a ticket button
  13. Because you’ll have a warm n’ fuzzy feeling that you’ve made a difference by taking part
  14. Because we’d love to see you there!
